5 Reasons Why CEOs Should be on Instagram

Whether we like it or not, social media IS here to stay. And we all have two choices. We can either cultivate and guide it and work it to our advantage. Or we can let it, well, run wild.

80% of people now Google you prior to meeting you, including prospect clients. (And yes, blind dates you go on, aren’t so “blind.”)

The digital world is now woven into our real world. Recently, I ran into someone that I recognised from Instagram, and he also knew me. With a large online following, primarily based in Dubai, gone are the days when I can go to the downstairs supermarket in my PJs without being recognised.

Through our agency, as part of our influence building marketing strategy, we have put all of our leaders and CEOs on Instagram. One of my clients, a chairman of a large green tech company, had originally questioned why, a man like him in his 50s, should be on Instagram.

I had a few reasons why he should be on Instagram (as well as the other social media platforms 😉):

Document your life

Instagram is an excellent platform to document your professional life and indirectly market your business. People don’t trust “faceless” corporations anymore, so consider Instagram as part of your company’s PR strategy to build trust. Show them what a great company culture you have, use Instagram for special announcements and show the amazing journey that your company is on.

Position yourself for keynotes

When you are being pitched / pitching yourself for speaking engagements with your media kit, often it helps if you have online followers; event organisers will see you as a channel to help promote their event. A following creates influence.

Leverage your conference keynotes or panel discussions: many of the media outlets and audience will be on Instagram, and often will take a picture and quote at the event, and re-share.

[HOT TIP: Film your keynote for YouTube and then create 30sec - 1min highlights for LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook.] From this content, people will see that you are a speaker, and will invite you to further engagements.

Have an online-offline approach to building your reputation.

Inspire the next generation

800 million people are on Instagram and it’s still growing (even my Nan is there, and I see some parents creating accounts for their babies – although, I’m not sure how I feel about this… you??). With new features such as InstaStories, IGTV and Instagram shop, Instagram is positioning itself to become the biggest social media powerhouse.

Build your influence

As I mentioned above, when you have an online following, you are perceived as more influential. People will want to gift you things, have you speak at events etc. MOANING about fashion influencers? Take a leaf out of their book. They created money from nothing – brands PAY them for their influence! And by positioning yourself as an industry expert and influential voice, people will pay more for your product and service too.

Everyone else is on it

Other CEOs are on Instagram. Government officials. Presidents. Celebrities Aspiring authors. Entrepreneurs.

So get on it. Period.
